| ISCORMA-1 Summary 2001 marked the inaugural International Symposium on Stability Control of Rotating Machinery (ISCORMA-1). It was held on the shores of beautiful Lake Tahoe, California, 20-23 August 2001. Situated amidst towering pines and majestic peaks on the boundary between Nevada and California, Lake Tahoe is world renowned for its beauty and recreational opportunities. It was an ideal location for ISCORMA, combining a relaxed environment fostering the open sharing of knowledge and ideas with a place to unwind and enjoy the beauty of the Sierra Nevada and one of the world’s most stunning Alpine lakes. The host hotel, Embassy Suites, was selected for the quality of its accommodations as well as convenience to the beaches, casinos, restaurants, and other attractions on the Lake’s south shore – most within walking distance. The Horizon was the alternate hotel, located nearby. The following keynote addresses were given: Dr. Harold D. Nelson of Arizona State University in Arizona, USA, “Creativity, Connections, and Chance in Rotordynamic Research” Donald E. Bently of Bently Rotor Dynamics Research Corporation, sponsor of the conference, “Summary of BRDRC’s New Research for Year 2001” Dr. Agnes Muszynska of A.M. Consulting, “The Fluid Force Model in Rotating Machine Clearances Identified by Modal Testing and Model Applications: An Adequate Interpretation of the Fluid-Induced Instabilities” Number of attendees: 102PARTICIPANTS REPRESENTED THE FOLLOWING COUNTRIES:
Each participant received the proceedings on CD and, as a conference gift, a blue combination calculator and international date and time calendar with the conference logo, date, and place on the top in white. Monday afternoon, preceding the official beginning of the conference, was a two-hour short course, “ServoFluid™ Control Bearing Applications,” presented by Bently Rotor Dynamics Research Corporation. This was enjoyed by a large number if conference attendees who took the opportunity to participate. The conference began with a Welcoming Reception held in the ballroom on Monday evening, with the introduction of Donald E. Bently by Dr. Paul Goldman, followed by a Welcome Address given by Don Bently. Sessions began the next day with three parallel sessions, each having two section organizers and two session co-chairpersons. An outstanding social event Wednesday evening was a cruise of Lake Tahoe on the M.S. Dixie paddlewheel boat. A delicious dinner was served to the 71 participants. The cruise lasted approximately three hours, sailing into the beautiful Emerald Bay. Thursday afternoon there was a complimentary valley ranch tour to Carson Valley by bus. Among the awards given were the following:
Friday afternoon at the close of the conference, a complimentary bus tour (by invitation) was given of Bently Rotor Dynamics Research Corporation’s ServoFluid TM Bearing Engineering and Development Facilities in Minden, Nevada. During the conference, it was announced that ISCORMA-2 would be held in Gdansk, Poland, with Professor Zdzislaw Gosiewski as Vice Chairman. Abstracts | Awards | Photos | Summary
